Rivotril, a brand name for the drug clonazepam, is a benzodiazepine that is indicated for the treatment of panic disorder, which is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms. These symptoms can include heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or abdominal stress. Rivotril works by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that moderates the movement of nerve signals in the brain, thereby exerting a calming effect which can alleviate the distressful symptoms of panic attacks. In addition to treating panic disorder, Rivotril is often prescribed to manage anxiety disorders with or without agoraphobia, the fear of being in places where escape might be difficult or help may not be available in the event of a panic attack.
